There is not a whole I feel like I need to say about this movie other than a happy sigh. But first, since this is a lesser known film for many, here is a short (1 sentence) synopsis:
A boy is thrust into the world of faeries in order to help his gifted sister.
As for the plot, I am a huge fan of modernizing myth and folklore. "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" is probably one of my favorite series ever (and anything Rick Riordan has done for that matter is gold). This genre of myth is so rarely explored I appreciated it on that account alone. Several scenes are even reminiscent of Spirited Away as we deal with the Scottish version of faeries, spirits, and gods.
Finally the film touches on themes like family, dealing with emotion, and facing fears. These motifs were subtle enough to vitalize a great movie without drawing too much attention and obscuring beautiful music and visuals.
I can definitely see why Song of the Sea was nominated for Best Animated Feature at this past Academy Awards alongside the winner Big Hero 6.
7/10
